The main problem I see is that people share their serial numbers. And it only takes one person to reveal their number before the rest of the bloody internet has it too. What's to prevent this? Checking over the Internet may be adequate but then you abandon all non-Internet users.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but cracking seems like a much smaller issue.
