An essay on the topic would probably be appreciated by many. Software
developers and crackers alike...Many programs are so open that just
about
anyone could crack them, which would probably harm shareware developers
to
some extent.
OTOH security through secrecy doesn't seem to work, Microsoft has
demonstrated that all to well :-) However I realize that only by using
cryptographically strong methods will it really be possible to openly
reveal how one implements security, and that may not be a step that many
shareware developers wish to take, simply due to the lack of knowledge
in that field.
Industrial strength signatures are difficult to step around. But still a
crack is pretty simple to make in those cases...
But a cracked program suck for the user if it's frequently updated,
cause then he'll have to find a new crack. So for me cracks are of minor
importance -- not to mention that crackers might get it wrong and so
cracked programs are never really trusted 100% (i.e. they may crash
etc.).
I will think about sharing some of my experiences. If anyone has any
input,
please send it to me privately, since this is on the borderline of the
topic
of this mailing list.
What's interesting for me is weather or not those "cracked" serial
numbers actually belong to somebody who doesn't mind giving them away
(or perhaps it was "stolen" in someway), or if they are simply obtained
by re-engineering the program?
Surely there must be some shareware authors on this list who've found a
fake serial to their program, did it belong to a registered user? and if
so, what action did you take?
