Well, for printf and alike GCC can check for this type of errors for ages.
I've sent feature requests to Apple to extend the service to NSLog (and alike, ie. stringWithFormat:... etc.) for ages -- in vain. Perhaps if more of us asks, it might be added, after all???

(It should be added as another archetype for the "format" function attribute, and used in standard headers. Also, the fact that "format" function attribute can't be used with methods would have to be fixed.)
