Jixes! I have implemented the same thing, more or less, but as a panel
(there is a view like the one you describe too). Mine is mainly used to crop
a larger image into a smaller, and is heavily inspired by the cpop panel
used in iChat on the dev preview Jaguar.

I will drop a short announcement here when it is done!
