I just read in some book on programming Cocoa that NeXT had ported there

Yes.
If so, does anyone know if it is still available?
It's out of print and unsupported, but you can still find copies of it
for sale. Try these folks:

Did it allow you to write in Objective-C?
It *required* you to write in Objective-C. Java is a recent addition,
made after Apple bought NeXT.
You might also want to check out GNUStep, a free (both speech and beer)
implementation of the OpenStep API. The Foundation classes are fairly
complete, but the AppKit classes are less so, especially on non-UNIX
platforms. You can find it at:

Hope this helps!

Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today. There might be a law
against it by that time.
