NSStepper

I want to have the simple functionality for a NSTextField to use the method takeIntValueFrom: from a NSStepper but the NSTextField is always blank. All the connections are made correctly and there is no code that I am using to get in the way (since you can do this directly in IB.) This seems like it should be easy, is there something I am missing? Thanks.
