There is _never_ a time when there's no ulterior motive.
Granted, the ulterior motive may be an altruistic one, but nobody releases
code "just to release it". Well, maybe some mentally ill people do...
Rather, the ulterior motive may be "to get my name on a cool project" or "to
practice writing device drivers" or whatever. Joel Spolsky makes the point
that in the case of companies, open-sourcing stuff is a way of making
commodities out of their products' complements:
