I was thinking about generating a key based on something like the host name i.e. the user sends me their host name and I send them a license that will allow them to run the application on that computer only (i.e. it's encoded into the license key and checked each time the program runs).

I'd like to get people's feedback on whether this would help prevent piracy,

As stated before in this thread: nope, it won't stop piracy. :-)

and whether the extra step of people sending me the hostname (or some other info to identify their computer) in order to obtain a license would be likely to lose sales for me.

I don't know what other users think but personally I don't like programs that are tied to a specific machine.

It's a stupid restriction in my opinion, a restriction that fills no purpose as it doesn't stop piracy while at the same time annoys users, for example when buying a new machine.

If I own a copy of the program I want to be able to use that program on any of my computers. I own that copy of the progam. It's mine. I've paid for it. Please trust me, your paying customer, enough to give me this freedom.

You can still make the license personal by letting or requiring the user to register online.

* BTW, using the host name or the ip address is not a good solution. My laptop changes name and ip address all the time, depending on where I'm located. Using the mach address would be a better idea if you really want to take this route... until the customer upgrades her ethernet card of course.

The application has a demo mode that lets them try out the application, with saving and printing disabled, so they would be able to assess the application without a license.

Comments?

I like this approach. It's a nice way of demonstrating what the application can do.

Cheerio,
Malte
