Can anybody tell me how to write a Menu Extra??

Official answer is you don't. Apple reserves the Menu Extra API for its use, and doesn't want the menu bar to be cluttered with third party extensions. I think they have a point, personally. For similar functionality from an app (not a bundle running inside SystemUIServer), see NSStatusBar/Item.
