While I agree with you for the most part, I'd like to clarify this point
just a bit. You don't need to fiddle with system preferences every time
you want to want to enter Unicode characters. You only have to do that
once, to enable the keyboard menu; after that, Unicode and/or Symbol
input is but a single click away.

Still, entering hex codes is a painful way to input Unicode characters,
and the KeyCaps utility is little better.
