Actually, PB has a screen saver template now.

PB--> New ---> under "Standard Apple Plug Ins" choose "Screen Saver".

But you are right, it would be easiest to start from someone's opensource screensaver. A search at http://www.versiontracker.com in the OSX section will find a bunch, most of which are opensource.
