Hi,
You can get rid of the background easily. Set your button up like this:
Type: Square Button (some others work, but the square button for sure allows
you to disable the "bordered" property)
Behavior: Toggle (this is the important one).
I've created a few buttons with images on them, and this is how I've set
them up. I tried it now with a textual button and it works as well (though I
didn't set an attributed - probably blue underlined - string to it).
