Empty "Open recent" menu

I have an "Open recent" menu in my app: actually that's just the default
one provided by default; I didn't change the File menu at all. But the
corresponding list stay desperatly empty, no matter how many document I
open/save, etc.
I checked in the preferences files, there is an array of 3 elements under
the key "NSRecentDocumentRecords". This increases by one if I save a new
document... still nothing in the recent list.
Did I do something wrong to not have the recent documents?
