That example is using a subclassed openGL view. I'm wanting the exact same behavior but centered on a button.

Did you look at the OpenGL teapot example on Apple's web site? It has a
quaternion-based virtual trackball object for manipulating the 3D scene. I
think that's probably exactly what you are looking for -- it will give you the
behavior part, at least...
