OK... let me weigh in here (since I've been pinged privately about this
now)
I share some of the concern that Erik Buck and Ondra have, but not the
level that they do.
First, let me say that __without a doubt__ we have people within Apple
listening to the Cocoa needs. Look specifically to Heather Hickman,
she's tracking all this stuff, and I have faith in her to represent and
present the issues to Apple.
Do I wish that we had more Cocoa stuff? Yes.
Do I wish that there was more community interaction from Apple? Hell
yes (and I'd love to do just that for Apple... Scott Anguish, Cocoa
Liaison Engineer -- that would be the ultimate job to me... getting to
work with all of you in a full-time capacity)
But, as others have said, Cocoa __is__ improving in it's stature
publicly from Apple. Or, perhaps more evidently, Carbon is becoming
less of the public focus. This is necessary as the first step to
beginning again to push Cocoa from within Apple.
Do you folks think that it was a coincidence that Dan Wood's Watson app
was pushed at MacWorld 2002 in SF? That it was then picked up and
written about by national papers? I don't. But there still is a
horrible and ugly bias amongst some traditional Mac developers (witness
the RealBasic 'white paper' and the public responses to comments on
their positions, about a month ago).
Let me also say that a Developer Association is likely to have little
effect on it's own.. and I think that starting off with a web site is
the wrong way to get anything significant to happen..
Mainly, what Apple needs to be able to push Cocoa - both in advocacy and
in features - is Cocoa apps. It is starting though.. iDVD2, iPhoto are
two good examples of Cocoa things that Apple can start to push heavily.
To do that requires education.. and thats what I/we tried to do for a
long time via Stepwise.. and it's hard to keep up when you don't get the
recognition from Apple. Still, we are trying again... but there has
been way to much splintering happening.
