Having made the jump from Classic Mac OS (PowerPlant) to Cocoa
just last May, I can certainly agree that Cocoa is more
elegant in many areas. On the other hand, NeXT had a user
base of perhaps a few hundred thousands, compared to over
25 million for the Mac. From the Classic point of view,
some of the NeXT people don't fully appreciate
the difference between writing software that solves a
problem, and shipping a successful commercial product
to millions of customers. Taking some time to resolve
these differences is Okay. Successful commercial products
will do more to move Apple and the developer community than
a lot of rhetoric.
In my experience, the way to influence Apple is to build
relationships with the people doing the work that interests
you, and help them see how what you want them to do is really
in their interest. Sometimes you'll win but mostly you'll lose.
I have no problem with developers organizing to have their
voices heard, but unless you build relationships with the
people who can help, I don't see this as the most effective.
