I'd recommend the book "Mac OS X Unleashed". It is very very UNIX centric.
There are two great chapters for you: "Command Line Software Installation"
and "Troubleshooting Software Installs, and Compiling and Debugging
Manually."

They contain tons of examples and should get you on your feet quickly,
