IIRC, there's been a project that's gone under a few different
names to make a theme editor for X, part of which deals with
pixmaps (I think). It's open source, so take a look for
Sprocket, ThemeShop, and/or ThemePark, and you might be able to
use some of the code or at least get some more information from
the people working on it.
