The Custom NSCell thing can be done - you specify can specify a cell class for the spreadsheet to use.

I am curious about the shift-select behavior. right now you can click and drag to select an arbitrary range of cells. Are you wanting to be able to put the cursor in one cell, and then shift-click somewhere else to get all the cells between these two points?
