You can still use FindFolder to locate the desktop folder. Some other
special folders, you can use NSPathUtilities, but the desktop folder
is not among them.
Most everything you're used to using in OS 9 will still work in X,
although make sure you use the FSRef/CFURL versions so you get long
filename support.
