A little guidance

Hi.
I am designing a program which will contain a "timeline" onto which the user can drag and drop and reorder various objects; conceptually similar to an editing timeline you might find in Final Cut Pro of Adobe Premiere. My question is in regards to the best method to implement the "timeline".

Should it be in a custom view? Should/can I use PDF images for the background?
I am not quite sure which way to go.

I am a newbie and am simply looking for some suggestions.

Any input would be helpful.

Thanks, Al
