actually, all of my mail from the list has the cocoa-dev address as the reply. i often get duplicates as well, but those go into my regular inbox. this one went into my cocoa box, and i assumed (yes, the ass-you-me rule applies here for sure) that it came from the list. i was upset and screwed up. what i was asking was rhetorical. i was really saying: "i wish i hadn't done this stupid thing and that i could take back the misdirected email i sent.".

come to think of it, i probably shouldn't be using American vernacular and rhetorical questions on an international list. that's another, much less painful lesson to learn here.

Erik's message was a personal email to me, but it got filtered into my cocoa-dev mailbox and i thought it had been posted to the list.

if anybody knows a good way to dig oneself out of this kind of ditch, i'd sure love to hear about it

Sure. Just use "reply" or "reply all". If done so, there is no way at all to send a private message to a list, whatever mailbox it happen to be in (just since it can't have From: or Cc: or Reply-to: of the list address).
