"Building Cocoa Applications" does, indeed, cover a broad range of
topics. And it is well written. I just wish it had been edited better.
There are quite a few errors (in the examples and elsewhere).
Unfortunately, O'Reilly's editors have been doing an increasingly poor
job these last few years. Perhaps the editors aren't skilled enough, or
maybe they're simply overworked. Either way, I wish O'Reilly would take
care of the problem. The only publishers whose books I'll buy sight
unseen are Prentice Hall, Addison-Wesley, and O'Reilly. I'd hate to
have to take O'Reilly off my list, but it's looking like I'll have to do
so soon.
At any rate, I would recommend that those who can wait to buy the book
when most of the errors have been corrected (presumably in the next
printing). Otherwise, you'll be stuck doing the editors' job yourself,
like I have been.

PS: If the authors are reading this, don't take this as criticism of
your work. Every time I've been published, similar things have
happened. The worst was when the final section's heading of one book
was changed from "Denouement" to "Denouncement," presumably because the
editor didn't know what "denouement" meant and didn't want to look it
up. So I know how it is, and I don't blame you! :)

I'd have to agree with you on that. I own all three Cocoa books (the
two O'Reilly books, and Hillegass's book), and have found that "Building
Cocoa Applications" is the best books so far for covering a broad range
of topics. Not to say that Aaron's book isn't as good, it just doesn't
seem as comprehensive. I wouldn't hesitate recommending either book to
anybody looking to learn or expand their knowledge in Cocoa.

Incidentally, any news at O'Reilly?
The Garfinkel & Mahoney book is out, and it is *great*. Lots of
examples and lucid explanations, signatures for the major methods,
copiously illustrated, well organized, just a delight. My only
complaint is that there's nothing on networking, but the book is 600
pages, so that may explain it. Maybe that can be part of an on-line
addendum. Anyone who's learning Cocoa on their own needs to work
through this book, and it would also be an excellent foundation for a
course.
I *don't* work for O'Reilly, I just happen to be a satisfied reader.
