However, I'm in the same boat as a lot of people here no doubt are: Love
Cocoa, have to develop things cross-platform. I'm sure this is a pretty

so here goes: Whatever happened to Yellow Box for Windows and Linux?
Currently Cocoa isn't very compelling for anyone doing large-scale
commercial application design, since it won't do anything other than Mac
OS X. While I'm aware of GnuStep, it just isn't the same. Is Apple doing
something about this situation, or will Obj-C/Cocoa always be only good
if you're developing in-house tools or Mac-only software? Please say it
ain't so.
Unfortunately for you (and you'll probably hear it) this is an oft-discussed,
re-hashed, and further discussed topic on which people have some very strong
opinions. In other words, it's a lesser Holy War situation (not quite to the
level of Mac v. PC, VI v. EMACs or anything like that, but still a potent
subject.
Likely, few people will want to re-hash it, so I'll give a summary...
1) Apple originally promised Yellow Box would be supported, in fact it was
supported in early developer releases of Rhapsody
2) Apple changed their mind
3) Opinions on the list range from full-out-blind-support-of-Apple-who-can-do-no-wrong
all the way up to Apple-is-a-traitor-to-the-cause. Most people agree that
at least the way Apple went about pulling support was uncool.
4) Opinions on the list about resurrecting Yellow Box range from both extremes
also
5) Apple has given no indication whatsoever that it intends to change its
mind.
GnuStep is coming along, but you're right, it's not the same. It's too bad
- to think of the productivity that could be gained if every VB and non-servlet
Java in-house project could be developed under Open-step compliant tools, but
let them figure it out for themselves and take advantage of it if you can.
