The world is asynchronous and threaded.

Unfortunately, the world is not thread-safe either.

Please observe that these are when thread safety fails. They are not design features. The particular thread safety features of all these things are traffic lights, boom gates and sirens.

When they do fail, it would be called a tragedy. Clearly the metaphor still holds here.
