i think that's what it comes down to, not just in this exapmle.

imho every object that may be crucial to the user or a crucial part of the input should be "on" by default with the option to turn it "off". the find panel for example:

case: [ ] ignore

anything that may only provide additional use or information *may* be turned off by default and then turned on by the user. example.

[ ] show item info

considerations regarding screen real estate or mere aesthetics should be omitted in such cases.
