There is no best tool.
I think the original issue was not the merit of Java itself, but whether it
or not it was appropriate for the Mac OS X desktop. There seemed to be some
concern that the "merging" of the Objective-C and Java runtimes would
degrade the ObjC/Cocoa combo.
Speaking from personal experience, I can see the issue from both sides of
the fence. When I initially decided to learn Cocoa, I thought to start with
Java/Cocoa because I was already familiar with the language. But some online
research (
http://www.bignerdranch.com/Resources/Java.html) and the advice of
some members on this list compelled me to learn Objective-C.
I think we as a developer community should be pushing those new to Mac OS X
development towards ObjC/Cocoa. People have a natural tendency to resist
change and stick with the familiar, but sometimes a little shove in the
right direction is all it takes to get them to overcome that initial
reluctance. Objective-C is clearly the language Cocoa was designed to be
used with, not to mention the fact that Objective-C, being a niche language,
can use all the support it can get.
