I should have been more clear. I know it couldn't be done on the fly, but if
I could add an option, and say it took effect on next launch, that is what I
am looking for.

Why would I need authentication to write to that file? It isn't installed by
root or anything, just a normal app. It would be a bummer if I had to write
to this file everytime, but can be done.

Is this not the correct way to hide the icon from the dock?
