_NXPlaceWindow: error setting window shape (1000)

My cocoa app displays images in a matrix. When I drag the window the number of rows and columns grow.
When I create a large window (200+) images I get these errors:

_NXPlaceWindow: error setting window shape (1000)

Searching "NXPlaceWindow" on the cocoa-dev archives, developer search and google turned up no matches.

Clearly I must be doing something bad in my code. Can anyone suggest what this message might be hinting at?
