May be put this alert panel in you action method, so when it tries to
set the name of your variable, it will perform the check there and if
it exits just not set the var and display the alert panel

Having read the button discussions I'm now trying to "correctly" title
a button. A user types in a name which is not permitted because it
already exists. So I run an alert from a textShouldEndEditing method.
When the user clicks the alert button they're supposed the fix the
name.
NSRunAlertPanel(@"Name already in use",
@"Please choose a name you are not
using for another entry.",
What should the button label be?
Dismiss,
Acknowledged,
Okay,
