The situation was being way overthought here..

by basically ignoring the pasteboard, but keeping track of the dragged nodes in the source document, I can just deal with it directly.. no archiving, no worrying about the instance variables not remaining the same during the move while waiting for the data to come back..

nothing like that...

Thanks to Brent for a gentle nudge which got me thinking, and Chuck Pisula's DragAndDropOutlineView demo which had this snaked away....
