Thanks for that. Trashed the plist, opened Finder Prefs and flipped the two radio buttons.
My newly created plist (10.2.1) now has:

AlwaysOpenWindowsInColumnView = Yes
and
NewWindowTargetIsHome = Yes.

As a result my new FInder windows now come up in column view with my home directory highlighted.
So trashing the plist seems to have achieved both objectives for me. Wonder if these prefs will stick ...
