Be aware that when Apple was originally developing the MacOS/Lisa GUIs,
they were competing with Apple II and PC-DOS interfaces that heavily
used the keyboard and function-keys. Users were not power-users. They
did not touch-type; they were not familiar with using a mouse, which
certainly didn't come standard with other computers. A one-button mouse
was easier for novice user to understand. A window with one OBVIOUS
resize box was easier to understand. Many users were afraid of
computers and afraid of losing their data -- the Mac was the first
computer that they loved.
Tog was there at Apple and can answer questions via email, if you're
polite. Check out <

(Unfortunately, Tog hasn't kept watch on MacOS's growth over the years.
He was unaware of the various Folder/Window short-cuts that were
available in the MacOS 9 Finder, and he probably isn't very familiar
with MacOS X.)
Also check out <
http://www.gui-bloopers.com/>, even though that author
uses MS Windows, he is aware of how bad the typical Windows GUI is.
