I note that there is some animosity about the whole concept of drag-and-drop editing among people who didn't come to OS X via OS 9; it almost leads me to believe in a conspiracy theory, like some of the engineers that came over from Next said "Hey, if these Mac OS guys insist on this drag and drop editing, let's make it as clumsy as possible so everyone can see how stupid the whole concept is!"

Like that conspiracy theory on why it is impossible to keep column view for everything in Finder in spite of the preference to do so? :-)

You know, I generally agree with you, but this way of argument reminds me of one very old and not particularly bright joke: did you hear about the Russian and American engineer who discussed something, and American asked "Hey, how much you get paid for a hour's work?" The Russian kept silent for a moment, then said "But we don't hang niggers!".

Conspiracy or not, the Cocoa text d&d *is* lousy -- better if there would not be one at all.

Whilst the fix would be, at least for Apple who have sources, *extremely* simple:

- make the delay user-settable from 0 to an hour, *AND*
- use the switching cursor idea Dennis written about.

Hell, I guess I'll try to do that in a next OCSmartHacks release... or perhaps Mike might in TextExtras? Mike?
