I got this to work by throwing out ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist Reset the preferences, close the window, and reopen it. Now, if I could only get it to open in User instead of Computer! Anyone know how to do that?

My preference for Computer/Home for new windows works fine. So does my "Open new windows in Column view" preference. There is no preference to change *all* folders to one view or another. When you're in column view, it doesn't change to match the folder you go to (thankfully), but you can't tell what the default of the current folder is without opening it separately. In column view, this means you need to select the preference "open folders in a new window" so that a double-click actually does anything -- that's a really weird inconsistency. Unfortunately, new folders are pre-set to open in icon view (and that would include anything created during an install, including the OS X install). There is no preference to change that, as far as I can tell.
