CFBundleTypeRole?

Greetings,
I read the technote, I read the headers, what I'm wondering now is why
it's necessary. Does anyone know why we need to set this plist key? Is
there some feature in the MacOS that I'm overlooking that now makes
this necessary?
Let's say my app, PICTHammer.app, can edit pict files, but only view
jpegs. Obviously I should set it to be an editor for the first document
type, and a viewer for the second. But what does this do for the user?
There is no 'edit' feature in the MacOS, that I know of. When you click
a file, it launches the app you've designated for it (or which has the
corresponding creator code). Do I get different file permissions if
I've set up my app to only view a particular file type?
Confused by simple things,
-Chilton
