4% does seem a bit much. Profile or sample the process and let us see the results.

(On BeOS, 4% of the CPU is what it took to play an MP3! Compare to
15-35% on "the world's most advanced operating system..." =/ )

Don't blame the OS for a bad application. If you want fast playing, try mpegToaster.
