There is a program called Easy Grade Pro that asks the user to make a
backup on quit. The teachers in the district I work for use it and
click yes. I'll often see 23 copies in one folder and the teacher
often forgets which one they just modified and call me down to come
and fix it. This is a Mac and PC application. I find this to be a
really, really bad solution to a problem that *shouldn't* exist. The
Temporary Items folder is cleaned up at shutdown, not startup AFAIK.
This is to keep from deleting files after a crash.

While not unheard-of, keeping automatic backups is not the norm in traditional
Mac OS. The programs I know of that do offer it vary in whether it's on by
default, and the user is often able to control how many prior copies are
retained and where. The temporary items folder in traditional Mac OS is
distinctly not the appropriate place for them. This is a folder that's emptied
on boot and only meant for things that are truly transient. I would
say default
to putting backups with the current copy (or maybe more strictly, leaving it
where it was, simply renamed), making it easier to find for a wider range of
user experience. But, it would be nice to provide the user with a mechanism to
specify an alternate backup location.
