Getting the macs serial number

Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to access the macs hardware serial
number. I know about the "serial-number" entry in the IORegistry but
this looks something like this
4b364100 00000000 00000000 00534730 33343252 58000000 00000000 00000000
00000000 00000000 000000
which bares no resemblance to the serial number on the back of my mac.
I'm pretty new to this so any help would be much appreciated.
Especially any sample code which deals with the IOKit.
