Well, I should've put a little more thought in to that before I said it. First, are you using Jaguar or 10.1? The revisions to Aqua in Jaguar mean that the shadows are much less significant than they would have been. Without seeing the morphing and distortion of the button myself, I wouldn't really be able to say. How is it distorted?

I don't see any significant shadows, but assuming that the button
changed it's frame to accomdate a shadow, would you expect that [button
setFrame:[button frame]] would create so much havoc? As I sit here, I
am starting to wonder if my super view is creating some problem. I am
going to re-run the experiment in a small test project to verify.

For whatever it's worth, the progress indicator is only off by a little
bit.
