API for Address Book's variable length field "style" in Edit mode?

I'm intrigued by the way Address Book fields behave in Edit mode. The
way, for example, their length changes as you type, causing fields that
follow to shift their horizontal position. Also, the way the field
"name" appears in light gray, unless it you type something into it, in
which case the text becomes black.
It seems to me that this Edit mode field "style" (for lack of a better
word) would be highly useful in many applications. So I guess, I really
have three concrete questions:
1. Is there an API available that would make this field behavior
available to developers?
2. If not, can anyone provide me with some good pointers as to how one
might go about accomplishing the same behavior using the Cocoa
frameworks?
3. If anyone from Apple reads this, would they be willing to share
source code or post an example of how this might be accomplished?
