Ick. Does anyone know if the same is true for distributed objects?

Distributed objects do not require a login, but the name server for the default NSPort subclass uses the bootstrap server, and processes started within a login context will usually use a different bootstrap subset than those started outside of a login context.

See <http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/macosx/Darwin/General/ KernelProgramming/contexts/Bootstrap_Contexts.html> for some documentation on this issue (it's well hidden, isn't it? I think that since it applies not just to those who are doing kernel programming it should perhaps be moved to the System Overview).
