This is more a Mac OS X/Open firmware question than a
Cocoa question, but I'm hoping someone on this list
(hopefully from Apple) will respond with some useful
tidbits.
Basically, I've been looking through the boot process
of Mac OS X. It is my understanding that Open Firmware
goes out and finds all the devices about and then trys
to load BootX from the default boot device. If a boot
error occurs, it then trys to find BootX on the other
devices in a predefined order.
Now, the question here is... How does it know where to
look for BootX? I know you can load files into Open
Firmware and run them from filesystems. Does OF do
some sort of tree traversal of attached the
filesystems on available devices? That would seem to
take an impossibly long time. Does it only try the
default installation location? Or is it something more
complex?
I appreciate any insight I can be provided on this
issue.
