I can recommend using Powermail for lists like these and just never
delete the mails. Every mail is indexed, so you get sorted results _very_
quickly (some seconds). I have 11.000 mails form this list stored on my
iBook and I always found what I'm searching for within seconds. Not
comparable with any other mail app.

I'm not affilated with them, but find this to be much better than any
archive. And btw, a mail folder can be stored as FIlemaker archive.
