Software Registration using Authorization/Authentication APIs?

Greetings all,
Has anyone experimented with using the Authorization/Authentication APIs
(ie. Security APIs) for handling software registration? I was looking to add
this portion to my software, and watching the WWDC 2002 sessions. A
certificate may be a complex way to insure registrations, or could it be done
with min user interface.
What does everyone think?
