If you're looking specifically for BSD socket/Cocoa code, the Picture Sharing examples have been updated and are available at

http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/Sample_Code/Networking.htm

Look on the left-hand sidebar for the links. These use NSFileHandle to wrap a BSD socket.
