Upgrade to 10.2. Seriously, this kind of thing just doesn't work too well on pre-10.2, and Apple addressed lots of the issues for 10.2. You can't really work around all these issues yourself -- even if you work around this one, I'm pretty sure you'd quickly encounter others.
