Database client development

With Enterprise Objects only in WebObjects how are people developing database client applications. The Apple docs contain very little about database access. ODBC seems to be supported, but there is little about its use. Has anyone attempted to use EO with a client/server app? Does the licensing allow for this, or is it 3 tier only now? It seems to have its own version of PB which would not be desirable in our case. There do not appear to be any Objective-C wrappers for ODBC in the regular developer tools.
