Thanks to everyone who helped with the directory functions. My next question concerns converting absolute paths to relative paths and vice versa. It seems if my project files are to have any sort of between-machine portability they should use relative not absolute paths, help... how do I convert?

Assuming you're using PB and not CodeWarrior: Select a file in the project and choose "Show Info" from the contextual menu, or press Command-I. Make sure the reference style set for files that don't need to be referenced by an absolute path (e.g. the Cocoa frameworks) are set to "Group Relative" or "Project Relative".
