Well, nothing heard from anyone, but I found an alternative approach by interrogating each active mail account to see if it was fetching mail. ;-)

I'm can tell if new messages arrived in the main account INBOX, but if anything was filtered into a different mailbox, I'm not having much like finding it. I know Mail.app has an easy way to keep track of at least the unread count for each mailbox (since it displays it quickly in the mailbox list), but I haven't found it yet.
